President Bola Tinubu’s government has approved the construction of 40 houses for judges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as part of its Renewed Hope Agenda. The agenda aims to provide secure and comfortable housing for judiciary members.
This development was confirmed by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday.
The 40 homes are set to be constructed in the Kantampe District, with allocations as follows: 20 for the FCT High Court, 10 for the Federal High Court, and 10 for the Court of Appeal. The project is expected to be completed within a 15-month timeframe.
Minister Wike emphasized President Tinubu’s importance to the judiciary, stating, “The President finds it difficult that judges and justices are living in rented houses and hotels, which is not safe for our judicial officials and inconvenient for them to do their work.” Consequently, the President directed the FCT Administration (FCDA) to construct 40 housing units for judges and justices in the Kantampe District.
In addition to the housing project, the Federal Executive Council approved various infrastructure initiatives to enhance access to the judicial complex. These projects include building a road connecting Artillery Road N11 to the judges’ residences and improving the internal pathways within the residential area.
Furthermore, there are plans to create a road linking Ring Road 1-N16 Shehu Shagari Way to the judges’ residences and to develop pathways connecting to the Court of Appeal Abuja division.
The infrastructure projects are part of a larger strategy in the FCT, which includes constructing more than 75 kilometres of roads in satellite towns such as Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Bwari. Wike expressed the government’s commitment to completing these initiatives by December, which aligns with its goal of enhancing living conditions in the region.
Additionally, Wike announced cancelling a previous agreement for the Maitama 2 development due to delays and inadequate progress. A new bidding process will be launched to ensure the successful development of the area, potentially easing housing shortages in Abuja.
This initiative reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to addressing the judiciary’s immediate needs and broader infrastructural improvements across the FCT. It will create a more conducive environment for judicial operations and improve residents’ quality of life.
