The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Aba Branch, was shaken on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, with the devastating news of the brutal murder of one of its members, Barr. Lucky Chinonso Emeh. Barr. Emeh, who was an employee of the Abia State Ministry of Justice in Umuahia, was gunned down in cold blood by unknown assailants.
Preliminary investigations, as revealed during a condolence visit by the NBA Aba Branch’s Executive Committee, led by Chairman Charles Nsobundu Onuchukwu, Esq, to the deceased’s family, disclosed shocking details about the incident.

According to the victim’s elder brother, Barr. Emeh received a phone call from someone he knew on the evening of September 2, 2024, at around 7:45 p.m. The caller requested he meet at a specific location, which Barr. Emeh declined.
Later that same evening, at around 8:00 p.m., Barr. Emeh went to a restaurant near his home for dinner. The same individual called him again, and he informed them of his whereabouts. Shortly after, the caller and his gang arrived at the restaurant and shot him twice in the forehead. After executing the attack, the assailants took his phone, fled the scene in a waiting vehicle, and disappeared into the night.
The Nigerian Bar Association Aba Branch expressed its outrage and deep sorrow over the loss of their colleague. In a joint statement issued by the Chairman, Charles Nsobundu Onuchukwu, Esq, and Secretary, Chuks Nwaokoro, Esq, the NBA condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless and heinous act that cannot be tolerated.
“This act is a complete affront and assault on members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Aba Branch, and the legal profession as a whole. The life of our colleague has been snuffed out in his prime, and this is unacceptable,” the statement read.
The association has called upon the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, to take the matter seriously and ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. The NBA Aba Branch vowed not to rest until the culprits are caught, urging the authorities to protect lawyers, who they believe have become endangered in recent times.
“The branch will not leave any stone unturned in getting to the root of this dastardly act and apprehending the individuals responsible for this mindless act. We stand firm in our demand for justice,” the statement concluded.
The legal community, both within and outside the Abia State Ministry of Justice, mourns the loss of Barr. Emeh, as lawyers call for improved security measures to safeguard their lives while they perform their professional duties.
