A sudden thirty-minute rainstorm that swept through Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Monday evening has resulted in tragedy, claiming the life of a renowned Taekwondo coach and champion, Musa Ismail.

The incident occurred between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at the Lower Niger River Basin Authority (LNRBA) area, where a section of the recently renovated Badminton court collapsed amid the downpour. The collapsed structure fatally struck Coach Musa, who was at the facility to play and train with friends, as he routinely did.

Sources reliably informed Vanguard that the renovation of the facility had been carried out by the previous administration. Unfortunately, part of the newly refurbished building gave way under the pressure of the rainstorm, resulting in the fatal accident.

A visit to the site on Tuesday revealed that the Badminton court had been sealed off, with the damage still visible from the outside. The atmosphere at the Authority’s premises remained tense, as staff members declined to offer any comments regarding the incident.

Efforts to reach the Managing Director and Public Relations Officer of the LNRBA for an official statement were unsuccessful as of press time. The name of the PRO also remained unconfirmed.

A staff member, speaking under anonymity, confirmed that the deceased was not employed by the Authority but was a frequent visitor to the court for recreational training.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the facility has been closed to the public as investigations are presumably ongoing.
