The Finnish government has reportedly released two individuals arrested alongside Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Ekpa remains in custody following his apprehension on November 21, 2024, alongside four others, over allegations of involvement in terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and funding terrorism in Nigeria.
Arrest and Allegations
Ekpa was detained by Finnish authorities after the Päijät-Häme district court ordered his arrest for “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media.” He is accused of playing a pivotal role in funding and encouraging violent activities linked to IPOB in Nigeria’s southeastern region.
Sources disclosed that two of the five suspects arrested with Ekpa have been released, though details regarding their identities and reasons for their release remain undisclosed. Finnish government representatives confirmed Ekpa’s continued detention but declined to provide further information.
Nigerian Government’s Extradition Request
The Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has announced that the Federal Government has formally requested Ekpa’s extradition. Documentation for the extradition has been submitted to the Finnish authorities.
“Legal action is going to be taken accordingly,” Gen. Musa said. “The Federal Government has forwarded most of the requirements to the Finnish Government, and I’m sure the right thing will be done.”
International Collaboration
Investigations reveal that Finnish authorities are working with their Nigerian counterparts to address the alleged activities of IPOB, which have been linked to violence and unrest in parts of Nigeria. The collaboration aims to curtail the propagation of extremist propaganda and its impact on national security.
As of now, Simon Ekpa remains in custody, with further legal proceedings anticipated as international and diplomatic measures unfold.
