Makurdi, Benue State – July 2025. In a bold and stirring address at the NBA North-Central Security Summit held in Makurdi, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, reaffirmed that security is a constitutional right, not a privilege, citing Section 14 of the 1999 Constitution.
The summit, themed “Strengthening Security, Rule of Law, and Justice Delivery in North-Central Nigeria,” was hosted in partnership with the Benue State Government.
Speaking before an audience of security experts, government officials, traditional rulers, and legal practitioners, the NBA President decried the alarming state of insecurity in the region.
He referenced the recent kidnapping of six law students en route to law school, as well as the brutal killing of over 200 civilians in Yelewata community, Benue State, as grave indicators of the urgent need for coordinated action.

“Security is the foundation of peace and justice. It is the duty of the state to protect its citizens, and the duty of all stakeholders to collaborate in that effort,” Osigwe declared.
He emphasized the critical role of intelligence gathering, community involvement, and multi-sectoral collaboration in addressing the root causes of violence.
Calling for practical, home-grown solutions, he urged participants to use the summit as a platform for formulating sustainable strategies to enhance justice delivery and public safety in the North-Central zone.
Expressing hope for lasting impact, the NBA President concluded by reaffirming the Association’s commitment to promoting the rule of law, human rights, and a secure, just society for all Nigerians.
