The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Northern Nigeria. He lamented the increasing attacks by bandits and terrorists, which have severely impacted various communities, especially in the North.
During a plenary session on Wednesday, following a long recess, Abbas praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their ongoing efforts to combat insurgency. He highlighted recent military successes, including the neutralisation of over 150 terrorists and the dismantling of significant bandit networks.
Abbas said, “Security challenges remain a significant concern, particularly in the North. However, substantial progress has been made in combating insurgency, with military operations successfully neutralizing over 150 terrorists and major bandit kingpins, according to recent reports from the Nigerian Armed Forces.”
He emphasised that despite these victories, communities in Nigeria continue to face devastating attacks. Abbas specifically mentioned incidents such as the Boko Haram assault in Gamborou-Ngala, Borno State, the massacre in Ndun village, Plateau State, and other violent incidents in Katsina, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Benue, and Zamfara states.
“Our heart goes out to the families of the victims and to the communities who have endured these unspeakable losses. Let us observe a minute of silence in honour of the memory of those who have lost their lives and to renew our commitment to preventing such tragedies in the future,” Abbas remarked solemnly.
Additionally, the Speaker congratulated Edo State’s Governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, and Deputy Governor-elect, Dennis Idahosa, on their victory in last Saturday’s election. He praised the security personnel for maintaining peace during the process and celebrated the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates, both of whom are members of the National Assembly.
“We wish them success in their efforts to lead Edo State towards progress and prosperity,” Abbas concluded.
