In a recent operation conducted by a coalition of security agencies in Enugu State, at least 27 individuals suspected to be members of a kidnapping gang and affiliated with the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the security faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), were killed.

This operation follows Governor Peter Mbah’s announcement of a stringent campaign against separatist factions and criminal activities in the state.

According to the Governor’s media office, the killings occurred in various confrontations with security forces over the past two weeks. Some of the deceased were reported to have connections with Simon Ekpa, also known as Auto Pilot IPOB, based in Finland.

In response to the escalating crime rates, residents have urged the Governor to enforce the state’s criminal code more rigorously and to demolish properties used by criminals as hideouts to deter further illegal activities.

One notable operation, led by Superintendent Onochie Ezeh, resulted in the rescue of kidnapped victims and the neutralization of a seven-member kidnapping gang at Ogbeke Nike. The gang had used a large poultry farm to conceal their hostages.

Superintendent Ezeh explained, “We had been tracking these kidnappers for over three months. They were operating within this area, using the poultry farm at Ogbeke Nike to keep their victims until ransoms were paid.

Based on a tip-off and victim accounts, we launched an operation. When they opened fire on us, we responded decisively and overpowered them.”

Ezeh praised the joint security task force, which was established by Governor Mbah to tackle kidnappings and armed assaults. The team has reportedly made significant progress, neutralizing over seven criminal gangs and identifying numerous criminal hideouts across the state, including New Artisan Market, Akwuke community, Akegbe-Ugwu, and other locations.

Dr. Kate Pamela, one of the rescued victims, recounted her harrowing experience, stating, “We were kept in the poultry farm for five days. Two victims were killed because their families could not meet the ransom demand. I recognize some of the kidnappers’ bodies, but I believe the area should be cleared and turned into a landfill to ensure justice.”

Governor Mbah’s administration continues its aggressive stance against criminal elements, with the goal of restoring peace and security to Enugu State.
