Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, officially swore in the newly elected chairmen of the 23 local government areas on Sunday, following their victories in the Local Government Council elections held the previous day, Saturday. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt.
In this electoral process, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) declared the Action Peoples Party (APP) as the dominant political force, securing 22 out of 23 chairmanship positions across the state.
The Action Alliance won the remaining seat. The APP’s sweeping victory in the elections has strengthened its presence in Rivers State’s local governance. This marked a significant outcome for the party, which has gained traction in local government politics.
In his address, Governor Fubara congratulated the newly elected chairmen on their success and urged them to remain committed to the promises they made during their campaigns. He stressed the importance of delivering on their pledges to improve the welfare of their local communities.
The governor emphasised accountability and service to the people, reinforcing his administration’s goal of enhancing local governance and development throughout Rivers State.
The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Bala Mohammed, the Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, who attended in support of the newly inaugurated officials.
This transition in local government leadership is expected to influence the execution of community-driven projects and policies across the state. Governor Fubara’s administration has made it clear that local governments play a critical role in fostering development at the grassroots level, and he has encouraged the newly sworn-in chairmen to work toward achieving these goals.
With 22 of the chairmen belonging to the APP and one from Action Alliance, this electoral outcome reflects a political shift in Rivers State’s local council politics, potentially impacting the dynamics of local governance for the duration of their terms.
