Police Rescue Pregnant Woman Detained By Anambra Vigilantes on Husband’s Orders

The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a pregnant woman who was unlawfully detained by the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) on the orders of her husband, who accused her of theft.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement in Awka, the state capital. He revealed that the woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was held in a security office in the Okija area of the state.

Following the release of a video highlighting the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, directed immediate action to secure the woman’s release and initiate an investigation into the case.

SP Ikenga stated:
“CP Itam frowned on the act of detaining and inhuman treatment of suspects by some members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) in the state. He assured that the root cause of the incident would be addressed to prevent future occurrences.”

The Commissioner also emphasized plans to work with relevant authorities to curb the excesses of unprofessional vigilante members in the state.
