Police authorities in Sokoto State have confirmed the killing of five persons following an attack by suspected bandits on communities in Kebbe Local Government Area.
Three other persons were injured in the attack, which occurred on Thursday evening and affected Girkau and neighbouring communities in Girkau Ward.
According to Channels Television, Sokoto State Police Command spokesperson Ahmed Rufai confirmed that five people were killed, three injured and an unspecified number of animals rustled during the invasion.
The police said additional information was still being gathered as security agencies continued efforts to address threats facing the affected communities.
Local sources also reported attacks on Dukura and Jabga communities in Girkau Ward, with residents reportedly abducted during the invasion.
Among those said to have been taken away were young residents and a vigilante member whose locally made firearm was reportedly seized by the attackers.
The bandits were said to have remained in Girkau for several hours before leaving with a large number of cattle.
The attack came only days after suspected bandits reportedly demanded ₦40 million from residents of Kebbe town and threatened to attack the community if the money was not paid.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that it was aware of the reported threat and said its Anti-Kidnapping Unit was working on the information.
Residents have renewed calls for increased security deployment and sustained operations to curb killings, kidnappings and livestock rustling across Kebbe and other vulnerable areas.
