The convoy of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Borno State, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, has been attacked by suspected terrorists along the Kareto–Damasak Road.
The incident occurred on Thursday as Gubio and his entourage were returning to Maiduguri after a thank-you visit to Damasak in northern Borno.
Daily Trust reported that suspected insurgents had planted explosive devices along the route, with a police armoured vehicle leading the convoy reportedly struck by an explosion.
Following the blast, the attackers attempted to ambush the convoy, prompting security personnel accompanying the entourage to engage them.
The Nigeria Police Force subsequently confirmed the attack, saying tactical operatives counter-engaged the terrorists after the convoy came under attack with Improvised Explosive Devices and rocket-propelled grenades.
According to the police account reported by TheCable, the attackers were forced to retreat into the surrounding bush, after which security personnel scanned and cleared the immediate area for possible secondary explosives.
The convoy was thereafter evacuated to a secure location, with police reporting no casualties among members of the entourage.
The Kareto–Damasak corridor remains one of the vulnerable routes in northern Borno because of persistent terrorist activity and its proximity to areas associated with insurgent movements around the Lake Chad region.
The latest attack again underscores the security risks confronting residents, security personnel and political actors operating in parts of Borno State as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections intensify.
