The Anambra State Police Command on Saturday apprehended Dr. Chukwuka Josiah Ikechukwu Nnamdi, a medical doctor accused of killing Assistant Superintendent of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Halisu Sahabi, during a sting operation in Awka, Anambra State.
According to top police sources, Dr. Nnamdi, hailing from Ifite, Awka, was discovered hiding in the ceiling of his neighbor’s apartment after the fatal shooting.

How the Incident Unfolded
SaharaReporters gathered that the EFCC team, dispatched from the Enugu Zonal Command, was conducting a night raid targeting suspected cybercriminals. After successfully arresting several suspects and seizing exhibits, including luxury cars and credit cards, the team moved to another location.
Upon arriving at an apartment complex, the EFCC operatives were met with resistance. The suspect, Dr. Nnamdi, refused to open his door, reportedly suspecting the operatives might be robbers or kidnappers.
Despite identifying themselves as EFCC officials, the suspect declined to cooperate. When the operatives attempted to break into his apartment, Nnamdi opened fire, fatally wounding ASE II Halisu Sahabi and injuring another officer.
Arrest and Recovery of Firearm
Following the shooting, Dr. Nnamdi reportedly discarded the firearm, a short pump-action gun allegedly licensed to his father, by throwing it into the bushes. He initially hid in his own ceiling before crawling into his neighbor’s ceiling, where police and EFCC operatives apprehended him.
The police also detained Nnamdi’s father, who claimed the gun belonged to him and that his son acted in self-defense. However, he refused to provide a written statement supporting his claim.

EFCC Team Lacked Bulletproof Vests
Sources revealed that the EFCC operatives involved in the raid were not equipped with bulletproof vests, wearing only branded EFCC jackets during the operation.
After the shooting, the injured officers sought medical attention at Awka General Hospital but found no doctors on duty. They then proceeded to a private hospital, where Sahabi was declared dead, and the other injured officer received treatment.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest and recovery of the firearm. Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga stated, “Investigation into the sad incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and the firearm has been recovered. Further details shall be communicated.”
EFCC Operative Laid to Rest
ASE II Halisu Sahabi was flown to Sokoto State, where he was buried according to Islamic rites. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, was reported to have facilitated the transportation arrangements.
