Ondo: Akeredolu Family Criticizes Premature Honor of the Late Governor.

Akeredolu Family Criticizes Premature Honor, Calls for Completion of Legacy Projects

The family of the late Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has expressed dissatisfaction with the state government’s decision to name an unfinished High Court complex in his honor.

The family described the gesture as “premature and insincere,” emphasizing that true homage would be completing the project and ensuring its functionality.

In a press release issued on Monday, Babajide Akeredolu, speaking on behalf of the family, acknowledged the late governor’s passion for the judiciary and commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for initiating the groundbreaking ceremony.

However, he criticized the decision to name the incomplete project after the late governor, stating, “True immortality lies in completing the project and ensuring its functionality. If the governor is genuinely committed to honoring Arakunrin Akeredolu’s legacy, he must demonstrate this through actions, not empty gestures.”

Widow Rejects Memorial Lecture

The late governor’s widow, Betty Akeredolu, also voiced her disapproval of a planned memorial lecture organized by the state government. She dismissed the event as insincere and accused the administration of engaging in propaganda.

“Which legacy? Lecture, my foot! My family and I are not aware. You cannot shave Aketi’s head in his absence. This is insidious propaganda carried too far!” she exclaimed.

The Akeredolu family further noted their disappointment at the lack of coordination and respect in planning the lecture series. According to the family, they informed Governor Aiyedatiwa of their own plans for a remembrance event, only to learn about the state-organized lecture through social media just days before it was held.

Calls for Action on Unfinished Projects

To honor Akeredolu’s legacy, the family urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to prioritize completing key projects initiated by the late governor, including:

  1. Upgrading Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a University: The family highlighted that preliminary studies and recommendations for this upgrade were completed during Akeredolu’s administration.
  2. Completing the Akure Flyover: They called for the completion of the flyover at Onyearugbulem Junction, a critical infrastructure project meant to be finalised within 18 months but still under construction.
  3. Addressing Infrastructure and Welfare: The family also appealed for the completion of abandoned road projects, resolution of salary discrepancies for civil servants, and funding for ministries and parastatals.

A Plea for Unity and Legacy Preservation

The family warned against divisive and vindictive actions, urging the governor to avoid ostracizing individuals associated with Akeredolu’s administration. “Akeredolu’s love for Ondo State and its people must not be diminished by retrogressive policies or political gimmicks,” the statement read.

They concluded by expressing gratitude to the people of Ondo State for their continued love and support, pledging to uphold the late governor’s legacy and hold leaders accountable.
