The gruesome murder of Princess Mediatrix Chigbo, Esq., a lawyer at her prime, by her abductors (suspected One Chance operators) in the Federal Capital Territory, presents yet another brutal reminder that in Nigeria, movement itself (which is a fundamental right of citizens) has become an act of courage. The case of Mediatrix was not of fate.

It was not a misfortune. It was another manifestation of the government’s failure to protect the lives and properties of her citizenry.

The citizens embody the nation; therefore, where a citizen boards a vehicle in her own country and never returns, the nation itself has lost its way.

Every unanswered crime and justice delay emboldens criminality. Every iota of silence or seeming inaction on the part of the state widens the corridor in which violence walks freely.

Justice must no longer arrive late in Nigeria. *Government must wake from her deafening slumber and end lip service to the fight against insecurity in Nigeria.* Criminals can not be more coordinated than our security agencies.

Late Princess Mediatrix Chigbo deserves justice, and our nation deserves institutions courageous enough to act proactively rather than retroactively.
And the salient rhetoric remains –
who will be next, if nothing changes? Sad !

While we pray for the eternal repose of the innocent soul of Princess Mediatrix, I deeply condole with the bereaved families, NBA Abuja branch and the Nigerian Bar Association in general on this irreparable loss. She will be sorely missed.

In solidarity,
Okey Leo Ohagba, Esq.
Past National Officer, NBA
