In commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2024, the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF), FCT Chapter, Abuja, stands united in the fight against sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence in the workplace.
Studies reveal that about half of women in Nigerian workplaces have experienced sexual harassment at least once. The International Bar Association’s May 2019 report on bullying and sexual harassment in the legal profession highlighted that 28% of African legal practitioners have faced bullying, with many women experiencing broader forms of gender-based violence.
Despite these alarming statistics, women workers and trade unions in Nigeria face significant challenges in convincing employers and the government to prioritize actions that address gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) in the workplace. A lack of data and awareness about the prevalence and harmful impacts of GBVH on workers has hindered progress.
NBAWF’s Commitment to Change
In response to this urgent issue, the Nigerian Bar Association Women’s Forum (NBAWF) has taken proactive measures:
- 2021 Sexual Harassment Policy: Launched to address sexual harassment within the NBAWF and create a safer environment for female lawyers.
- 2023 Sexual Harassment and Bullying Policy: Spearheaded by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), this policy mandates all law firms, NBA branches, and sections to publicize and implement measures to combat sexual harassment and bullying, ensuring accountability and protection for legal practitioners.
A Call to Action
Reports continue to expose the harsh realities women face at work, including harassment, abuse, and even fatal violence. It is time to break the silence and take decisive steps to end these injustices. The NBAWF urges all members of the legal profession and society to:
- Say No to Sexual Harassment and Bullying.
- Advocate for safer workplaces for women.
- Prioritize the implementation of policies that address GBVH.
