The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Citizens Liberties’ Committee, led by its Chairman, Nuhu J. Egya, Esq., paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Mr. Disu Olatunji, at the Command Headquarters in Garki, Abuja.

During the visit, Nuhu J. Egya, Esq., commended the Commissioner for his proactive measures in combating criminal activities within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He highlighted notable achievements, including the significant reduction in kidnapping and “one-chance” crimes in the area.

Egya also expressed the NBA’s concerns regarding several issues, such as:

  • The harassment and detention of lawyers while discharging their professional duties.
  • Violations of citizens’ fundamental rights by police officers.
  • Police handling of civil matters.
  • The conditions of detainees in police custody.
  • Clarifications on the ban on the use of tinted glass by FCT residents.

Commissioner’s Response

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Disu Olatunji, welcomed the delegation and appreciated the NBA Citizens Liberties’ Committee for their visit. He acknowledged the concerns raised and promised to address the issues of misconduct by officers towards lawyers. He emphasized the need for a cordial working relationship between the police and legal practitioners and assured the committee that the rights of citizens would be respected and protected.

Regarding the ban on tinted glass, the Commissioner explained that the measure was implemented to enhance security in the FCT, as criminal elements, including kidnappers and “one-chance” operators, often use vehicles with tinted windows for their activities.

He noted the success of the policy, including the seizure of vehicles used in criminal acts. He assured the NBA delegation that detainees are handled in compliance with the law and that suspects are charged within the stipulated timeframe.

Call for Collaboration

The Commissioner urged lawyers to cooperate with the police and eliminate any adversarial attitudes to foster mutual respect and understanding. He expressed his commitment to building trust and strengthening the relationship between the police and the NBA.
