During a plenary session on October 15, 2024, Senator Ashiru accused the NDLEA of corruption and called for the establishment of a new anti-drug agency. In response, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) revealed that illicit drugs were recovered from Ashiru’s residence, suggesting that his criticisms may be an attempt to deflect attention from these findings.

Speaking at a briefing, Marwa emphasized the agency’s role in maintaining accountability in governance and expressed shock at the senator’s statements, which he viewed as unfounded. He stated, “Those behind this challenge are feeling the heat of the EFCC’s work and do not want to be held accountable.”

Marwa elaborated on past encounters with Ashiru, including a raid on the senator’s property that resulted in the arrest of two aides for drug-related offenses. He argued that these incidents likely motivated Ashiru’s criticisms.

The NDLEA reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking, highlighting its recent achievements and international collaborations. Marwa affirmed that the agency remains undeterred by Ashiru’s accusations and will continue its efforts to dismantle illicit drug networks, including those linked to the senator.

“The statement made by Senator Ashiru is a gross misrepresentation of facts and a calculated attempt to undermine the integrity of the NDLEA,” he concluded.
