In a powerful reaffirmation of its commitment to human rights and justice reform, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) joined global advocates in marking the World Day Against the Death Penalty 2025 at an event organized by Avocats Sans Frontières France (ASF France), with the support of the Australian High Commission and the German Embassy.
Representing the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, at the event, Etaba Agbor, Secretary of the NBA Young Lawyers Forum, delivered a compelling message that echoed the Association’s unwavering stance on justice that upholds life and dignity.
The event, themed “The Death Penalty Protects No One, Abolish It Now,” spotlighted the urgent need for nations to move away from retributive justice systems and embrace humane, restorative approaches.

In his address, the NBA President emphasized that “the measure of a nation’s justice lies not in how it punishes its weakest, but in how it protects their rights even in the face of wrongdoing.” He further reiterated the Association’s commitment to advancing legal reforms that strengthen due process, ensure fairness, and promote restorative justice rather than punitive measures.
He also lauded the collaborative efforts of international partners and human rights organizations like ASF France, whose advocacy continues to challenge long-standing norms surrounding the death penalty and inspire progressive dialogue within the global justice community.
Speaking further, Etaba Agbor reaffirmed the NBA’s resolve to stand as a defender of the rule of law and the sanctity of life. “As a Bar, we stand firmly for justice that protects everyone — not by taking life, but by affirming its value,” he noted.
The commemoration brought together key stakeholders from the legal, diplomatic, and human rights sectors, all united by a shared vision — to build a justice system that protects, rehabilitates, and preserves the dignity of every individual.
