NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN to Speak at the 24th Commonwealth Law Conference in Malta

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN, is currently in Malta for the 24th Commonwealth Law Conference (CLC), which began from 6 to 10 April 2025. This prestigious biennial event brings together legal minds from across the Commonwealth, including judges, lawyers, academics, and regulators, to exchange ideas and discuss critical developments in the legal profession.

The theme of this year’s conference is: “Common Challenges – Common Solutions: Regulation, Innovation and the Rule of Law.” The sessions are designed to explore practical solutions to shared legal issues facing member states, with emphasis on strengthening regulatory frameworks, promoting innovation, and reinforcing the rule of law.

A key highlight of the NBA’s participation is Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN’s presentation during Session C1, titled:
“Balancing the Scales: Fair and Expeditious Regulation of the Legal Profession.”

This session will delve into the delicate interplay between ensuring high professional standards through regulation and safeguarding the independence, rights, and integrity of legal practitioners. Drawing from the Nigerian experience, the NBA President will offer insights on recent reforms undertaken by the Association to uphold ethical standards, address disciplinary concerns, and reinforce public trust in the legal system. He will also discuss challenges and best practices around timely and transparent regulation of the profession.

Importantly, the NBA President is accompanied by the General Secretary of the NBA, Dr Mobolaji Ojibara, who is also attending key sessions and engagements at the Conference. Their joint participation reflects the NBA leadership’s strategic commitment to global collaboration and professional development through active involvement in international legal platforms.

In addition to contributing to Session C1, the NBA delegation is engaging with counterparts from other jurisdictions to explore models of regulation, legal education, access to justice, and use of technology within the legal profession.

This participation reaffirms the NBA’s position as a leading voice within the Commonwealth legal community and demonstrates Nigeria’s readiness to align with global best practices in law and governance.
