The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has advocated for the immediate reopening of the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal divisions in Anambra State. Closed previously due to security concerns, Osigwe stressed the urgent need to restore these courts, asserting that secure access to justice is essential to uphold citizens’ rights.

Speaking at the 2024 Legal Year Opening Ceremony for the Anambra State Judiciary on Friday, Osigwe underscored the NBA’s dedication to a resilient judiciary capable of delivering justice impartially, despite challenges. “In challenging times, we must stay steadfast in this duty, as justice remains the foundation of every thriving society,” he remarked.

Additionally, Osigwe urged the Anambra Judiciary to harness technology to improve access to justice, noting that “technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity for an effective and sustainable justice system.” He emphasized that digital tools could make the judicial process more transparent and accessible, benefiting citizens with more efficient case handling.

Furthermore, Osigwe called on the Chief Judge of Anambra State and heads of courts to perform regular inspections of detention centers and prisons, as per the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. Such visits, he noted, would enable reviews of detainees’ cases, facilitate the release of those held unjustly, and mitigate unwarranted incarceration.

The NBA congratulated the Anambra Judiciary on its new legal year and looks forward to collective efforts in advancing a justice system rooted in transparency, accessibility, and the rule of law.
