EVERY STORY IS UNIQUE.
EVERY JOURNEY MATTERS.
Breast cancer awareness must mean more than recognising a month on the calendar. It must mean creating a culture where women have reliable information about their health, feel able to seek medical advice and can access the care they need.
Behind every diagnosis is someone whose life was already filled with work, family, responsibilities and plans. A diagnosis brings questions no one should have to answer alone. Early detection and timely medical attention can make a meaningful difference. Yet fear and misconceptions, as well as cost and difficulty accessing care, can stand in the way.
This year’s theme, “Every story is unique, every journey matters,” reminds us that we cannot assume we know what someone is going through. Every woman’s concerns deserve to be taken seriously, and her care should respect her circumstances and choices.
The Nigerian Bar Association through our Women Forum (NBAWF), reaffirms its commitment to the health, dignity and wellbeing of women within our profession and the communities we serve.
This month, I encourage women to make time for their breast health and get screened. And please seek medical attention promptly if you notice an unusual breast change.
We must remember, too, that men can develop breast cancer. Our male colleagues should also seek medical advice promptly about any unusual breast changes.
We stand with colleagues living with breast cancer, those adjusting to life after treatment, caregivers and families who have lost someone they love. “Members First” must mean something at moments like these; like colleagues willing to lighten one another’s burden and an Association working to make support more accessible.
And when October ends, let us keep showing up.
