The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Gwagwalada Branch marked its participation in the 16 Days of Activism campaign, an initiative directed by the NBA National Headquarters from November 25 to December 10, 2024.
This global campaign aimed at addressing violence against women and promoting human rights saw the branch make significant strides in fostering justice within its jurisdiction.
In line with the directive of the NBA President, Afam Osigwe, SAN, the branch’s Human Rights Committee, led by Hajia Aisha Kutiriko Nusa, carried out advocacy visits to police stations within the Gwagwalada, Kwali, and Abaji Area Councils. These efforts culminated in the release of seven detainees.
Breakdown of Releases
- Kwali Divisional Police Station: Six detainees—Isyaku Adamu, Zakari Nasir, Tanko Samaya, Tunde Isaac, Musa Ali, and Habila Gona—were freed. They had been detained for inciting public disturbances in Ashara/Bassa communities.
- Gwagwalada Divisional Police Station: One detainee, Sani Mohammed, was released, having been held for alleged cheating.
Representatives of the traditional leaders from Ashara/Bassa communities and relatives of the released detainees expressed profound gratitude to the NBA Gwagwalada Branch, commending their advocacy and praying for the members.

Collaborations and Insights
The visits facilitated constructive dialogues with Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and police personnel across various stations. The engagements were met with positive feedback, with officers commending the NBA for its proactive approach and calling for continued collaboration in the future.
In addition, the committee extended its advocacy to the management of OKMAS Nigerian Limited, the company handling the reconstruction of the Gwagwalada Market road. The team educated the company’s staff on adopting measures to safeguard the rights of residents and workers around the construction site.
