The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced a series of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s federal universities and enhancing their contributions to national development.
Speaking at a retreat organized for pro-chancellors of federal universities in Abuja today, Dr. Alausa highlighted key programs in agriculture, healthcare, transportation, and student entrepreneurship that align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Boost to Agricultural Universities
As part of efforts to ensure food security, 30 Universities of Agriculture across the country will receive ₦1 billion each to embark on mechanized farming. Dr. Alausa emphasized that this funding would enable these institutions to maximize their core competencies while contributing significantly to the federal government’s agenda for sustainable food production.
“This initiative is designed to empower our agricultural universities to lead the charge in modern farming techniques and food sufficiency,” the Minister stated.
Strengthening Medical Education
In a bid to address Nigeria’s healthcare workforce gap, 18 federal medical schools will receive a total of ₦17 billion to improve the training of healthcare professionals, including medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and nurses.
“This is a vital investment in our healthcare infrastructure,” Dr. Alausa noted. “It ensures that our institutions have the capacity to train professionals who will strengthen Nigeria’s health system.”
Renewable Campus Transportation Initiative
The federal government is introducing the Renewed Campus Transportation Program, under which each federal university will receive 25 electric tricycles for student transportation. Operated by student unions on a low-payment platform, these tricycles will charge ₦15 per drop, making them affordable and environmentally friendly.
“This program not only solves mobility issues on campuses but also reinforces our commitment to sustainability and the wellbeing of students,” Dr. Alausa said.
Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Grants
To foster creativity and entrepreneurial spirit among Nigerian students, the Ministry of Education will roll out student startup innovation grants. These grants are designed to support innovative students, enabling them to turn their ideas into reality.
“We want to unleash the immense potential of our youth by providing them the resources they need to innovate and contribute meaningfully to our nation,” Dr. Alausa emphasized.
A Renewed Focus on Development
Dr. Alausa’s speech underscored the government’s dedication to leveraging education as a catalyst for national development. By focusing on agriculture, healthcare, transportation, and entrepreneurship, these initiatives aim to position Nigerian universities as hubs of innovation and sustainability.
“These efforts are in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes food security, economic empowerment, and sustainable development,” the Minister concluded.
