The legal profession occupies a vital position the administration of justice and the orderly functioning of society. Law serves as the framework through which relationships among individuals, institutions, and nations are regulated, ensuring stability, accountability, and the protection of rights.
As custodians of this system, lawyers are entrusted with the responsibility of promoting justice, upholding the rule of law, and safeguarding the rights and interests of citizens.
Beyond acting as advocates for their clients, legal practitioners are also officers of the court whose conduct and integrity directly influence public confidence in the justice system.
This article examines legal ethics and professional responsibility in Nigeria, highlighting the regulatory framework governing lawyers and addressing recurring ethical challenges such as breach of confidentiality, forum shopping, unprofessional conduct, and improper advertisement.
