A legal practitioner, Edeh Uchenna, has petitioned Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu over the alleged continued detention of Godwin Francis Akpan despite an order of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
The September 24 petition refers to an order made on September 17 in Suit No. CV/4013/26 directing Akpan’s release from police custody.
According to the lawyer, Akpan’s detention arose from an investigation connected with a dispute involving his employer and another company. The petition maintains that Akpan had not been charged before a court.
Uchenna said the petition was not intended to prevent the police from carrying out a lawful investigation but argued that investigation, personal liberty and obedience to judicial authority must operate together.
He called for compliance with the subsisting order while any outstanding investigation proceeds through lawful channels.
