Kenya’s Vice President, Rigathi Gachagua, is embroiled in impeachment proceedings initiated by the national assembly following allegations that he supported violent anti-government protests in June. In addition to these accusations, Gachagua faces claims of corruption, promoting ethnic divisions, and engaging in conduct inconsistent with his official duties.
Lawmakers allege that Gachagua has amassed assets worth 5.2 billion shillings (approximately $40 million) since the last election despite his annual salary of $93,000. Among his notable possessions is the iconic Treetops Hotel in Kenya. In response, Gachagua asserted that his wealth stemmed from legitimate business activities and an inheritance from his late brother.
The political climate in Kenya shifted significantly after the protests, prompting President William Ruto to reshuffle his cabinet, remove several key figures, and appoint members from the opposition. A week ago, Ruto’s allies introduced the impeachment motion against Gachagua.
To halt the impeachment proceedings, Gachagua sought intervention from the high court, but his request was denied. During a Sunday prayer gathering at his home, he publicly asked President Ruto, lawmakers, and the Kenyan public for forgiveness if he had offended them. However, he later clarified that this appeal did not constitute an admission of guilt and dismissed rumours about his possible resignation.
Gachagua criticized the lawmaker who initiated the motion, labelling the accusations as “shameful and sensational.” The national assembly is scheduled to debate the impeachment motion on Tuesday, with a vote to follow before the issue moves to the Senate. Gachagua has vowed to defend himself vigorously against the allegations.
