Owerri, Imo State — The Imo State branch of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF), in collaboration with the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL), on Thursday, 24th July 2025, held a transformative training workshop focused on Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Family Justice, and Land Justice Guidelines.

The training, which aligns with HiiL’s global mission to help 150 million people resolve their most pressing justice problems by 2030, brought together seasoned facilitators and justice sector experts to explore innovative, user-friendly approaches to access to justice.

Leading the workshop were three HIIL facilitators: Mrs. C.A. Sunday-Iherue, LLM, ACArb, Imo State Lead; N.M. Obioha, Esq., MCArb; and Ngozi Ihiekwe, Esq., MCArb. They were joined by Mrs. Ijeoma Nwafor, Ph.D, HiiL Country Representative, and Maryam Abba, Esq., Project Officer.

Key discussions on Intimate Partner Violence stressed that healthy relationships—built on trust, respect, and equality—are the foundation of peaceful families and communities.

Participants examined the harmful effects of traditional norms that inadvertently reinforce inequality, advocating for equal participation in decision-making, economic empowerment of women, pre-marital counseling, and bystander intervention to support victims.

On Family Justice, the workshop emphasized effective communication, shared parenting responsibilities, and the importance of shielding children from parental conflicts to safeguard their emotional and psychological well-being.

On Land Justice, participants explored “fit-for-purpose” land mapping, the use of GIS technology, documentation in land transactions, and collaboration with local experts, surveyors, and traditional rulers. They also underscored fact-finding, ADR mechanisms, and collaborative decision-making to resolve disputes.

The highly interactive session featured real-life case contributions from participants, reinforcing the urgent need for community awareness campaigns to curb IPV, family disputes, and land conflicts across Imo State.

The workshop ended on a high note, with participants expressing deep satisfaction and a renewed commitment to championing justice at the family and community level.
