The Institute of Medical and Health Law (IMHL) has successfully concluded the 2025 National Medical and Health Law Conference, alongside the Induction of New Members, in what has been widely described as one of the Institute’s most impactful gatherings in recent years.

The conference brought together leading legal practitioners, health professionals, policymakers, researchers, and human rights advocates, all united in their commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s medical and health law landscape.

This year’s theme  “Towards Effective Regulation Against Human Rights Abuse and Medical Negligence in Religious/Worship Centres in Nigeria”  addressed a timely and pressing national concern. With many communities turning to religious institutions for healing, counselling, and alternative treatment, the conference examined the legal gaps, regulatory deficiencies, and human rights issues that frequently arise in such settings.

Throughout the event, speakers delivered rich, solution-oriented insights, calling for stronger institutional oversight, clearer accountability structures, and robust public education to curb abuse, negligence, exploitation, and preventable fatalities. Participants also underscored the need to harmonise medical ethics with religious practices to ensure that faith-based interventions respect constitutional rights and uphold health safety standards.

A key feature of the event was the Induction of New Members into the IMHL, marking the addition of fresh experts to the growing community of professionals shaping the future of medical and health law in Nigeria. The ceremony was conducted with exceptional decorum, reflecting the Institute’s unwavering commitment to ethical practice, professional excellence, and health justice.

The 2025 Conference has been widely praised as well-organised, intellectually engaging, and forward-looking, further cementing IMHL’s leadership role in driving legislative reforms, strengthening health governance, and safeguarding human rights within both medical and religious spheres.

Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn, exchange ideas, and contribute to a national conversation that continues to influence Nigeria’s health and legal systems. The insights gained are expected to fuel ongoing advocacy for safer, more regulated, and human-rights-compliant health practices across the country.
