IGP Launches Anti-Money Laundering Units To Combat Terrorism Financing

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has inaugurated specialized Anti-Money Laundering Units across the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen efforts in combating terrorism financing and financial crimes.

Police Crack Down On Officers Exploiting IG’s Name For Illegal Acts

This initiative, supported by the appointment of CP Hyacinth Azuka Edozie and Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) in all State Criminal Investigation Departments (SCIDs), seeks to dismantle criminal financial networks threatening national stability.

In a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP highlighted the units’ role in addressing complex financial crimes. He also emphasized collaboration with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to align with global standards and enhance Nigeria’s national security.

Recent Successes
The newly inaugurated units have already achieved significant breakthroughs:

  • Kano State (December 8, 2024): In Gwale, officers intercepted counterfeit currency valued at ₦129.5 billion, including ₦1.4 million in fake naira, $3.4 million in counterfeit U.S. dollars, and CFA 51,970 in fake CFA francs. Three suspects, Nura Ibrahim, Muhammed Muntari, and Usman Abdullahi, were apprehended.
  • Nasarawa State (January 13, 2025): In New Karu, a 53-year-old suspect, Ephraim Barde, was arrested with $160,000 in counterfeit U.S. dollars. Investigations are ongoing to expose his network.

These cases highlight the determination of the Nigeria Police Force to protect the financial system and curb illicit activities funding terrorism and organized crime.
