An International Bar Association task force roundtable scheduled for today in Hong Kong will examine whether an arbitrator’s nationality is a reliable indicator of independence and impartiality.
The discussion is taking place at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre as part of the task force’s regional consultations.
In an October 15 announcement, law firm Three Crowns confirmed that Singapore-based lawyer Sue Ng would participate.
Ng serves as rapporteur for the task force’s commercial arbitration workstream. Its co-chairs are Niuscha Bassiri, Diora Ziyaeva and Christopher Boog.
The project examines how nationality influences perceptions of neutrality across different arbitration settings.
The question has practical importance when parties assess potential tribunal members: nationality may shape perceptions, while independence and impartiality require careful consideration of the individual circumstances.
Ng’s practice covers international disputes and public international law. She is admitted in Singapore, England and Wales, and New York.
Today’s roundtable is a consultation. The announcement does not report a new IBA rule or completed findings from the meeting.
