The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has dismissed circulating rumours suggesting that Nigerians will be required to obtain a new physical tax identification card under the Nigerian Tax Administration Act (NTAA), clarifying that existing national identifiers already serve that purpose.

In a sensitisation video released on Monday, Aderonke Atoyebi, Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, explained that individuals do not need a separate tax identification (ID) card, as the National Identification Number (NIN) is already recognised as a valid tax ID for individuals.

For corporate entities, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number will continue to serve as the unique tax identifier.

According to Atoyebi, the clarification became necessary due to widespread misinformation surrounding the NTAA, which is scheduled to take effect in January.

She emphasised that the new tax administration framework is designed to streamline tax processes, eliminate duplication, and integrate existing national databases rather than introduce additional bureaucratic requirements.

“The idea that Nigerians will need to carry a physical tax ID card is incorrect,” she stated. “Your NIN is your tax ID as an individual, while registered businesses are identified through their CAC numbers.

The law simply harmonises existing systems to make tax administration more efficient.”

FIRS noted that the sensitisation campaign forms part of its broader public engagement strategy to ensure that taxpayers understand the scope and intent of the ongoing tax reforms.

The agency reassured the public that the NTAA does not impose new identity documentation burdens but instead promotes data integration, transparency, and improved compliance.

The Service further urged Nigerians to rely on official FIRS communications for accurate information and to disregard unverified claims circulating on social media and other platforms.

As implementation approaches, FIRS reiterated its commitment to continuous stakeholder engagement to ensure a smooth transition under the new tax administration regime.
