The Federal Government, on Wednesday, presented several broadcasts and video recordings allegedly made by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in open court as evidence to support terrorism-related charges against him.

The materials were tendered through the second prosecution witness (PW-2), identified only as BBB, before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The witness testified behind a protective screen provided by the court.

Led in evidence by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, counsel to the Federal Government, the witness confirmed that Kanu admitted to making the broadcasts and video recordings while in custody.

Among the pieces of evidence presented was a radio broadcast dated October 20, 2020, aired on Radio Biafra during the height of the #EndSARS protest. In the live broadcast, which was played audibly in the courtroom, Kanu was heard urging Nigerian youth to attack police officers and soldiers, directing them to ambush, disarm, and kill security operatives wherever they could be found.

The prosecution contends that these broadcasts incited violence and amount to acts of terrorism under Nigerian law.

The court session, which drew the attention of legal observers and the public, marks a significant development in the ongoing trial of the separatist leader. The matter was adjourned for continuation of trial and cross-examination of the witness.

Kanu is facing multiple charges, including terrorism, incitement, and unlawful broadcast operations, following his extradition and re-arraignment by the Federal Government.
