Enugu Police Commissioner Denies Allegations Amidst Emerging Evidence
The Enugu State Police Command has come under intense scrutiny following damning revelations about an alleged extortion scheme involving the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, and his anti-kidnapping squad.
According to multiple sources, businessman Olu Agwu was coerced into paying N62 million to various accounts allegedly controlled by senior police officers.
Despite the forceful denial issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the unfolding evidence suggests a complex cover-up, including false identities and financial transactions aimed at avoiding detection.
The spokesperson had earlier stated, “There is no evidence that the suspect paid N2 million to any Investigating Police Officer (IPO) in the Anti-Kidnapping office, as the alleged IPO with the name Emmanuel Ahamefuna does not exist in the office.” However, documents obtained by investigative journalists suggest otherwise.
Fake Identities and Money Transfers: The Unfolding Scandal
Investigations reveal that an officer who operated under the alias Emmanuel Ahamefuna was in fact Mr. Onyeisi, a police operative from the Nsukka region of Enugu State. Security sources have confirmed that the commander of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS) admitted before the Commissioner of Police (CP) that Ahamefuna was a cover name.
A credible source disclosed, “The commander of the anti-kidnapping squad confirmed that the real name of the officer is Mr. Onyeisi, but he purposely used Emmanuel Ahamefuna to register his line. He even confirmed it in front of the CP.”
Tension Escalates as Police Commissioner’s Role is Further Exposed
During a meeting held last Saturday in the CP’s office, further incriminating evidence was presented. A voice note surfaced where one Mr. Chinedu, identified as the Commissioner’s frontman, demanded additional payment of N100 million, allegedly on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
When confronted, CP Uzuegbu reportedly denied instructing Chinedu to send those threats, only for Chinedu to counter him, stating in front of witnesses, “You told me to say so to him.” The standoff took a dramatic turn when Chinedu threatened to expose further details if he was detained.
Extortion Scheme Unveiled: Bank Accounts Used for Transactions
Sources confirmed that several bank accounts were used in the extortion operation, making it difficult to trace the funds directly to top police officials. Among the transactions revealed:
- A deposit of N10 million into an account associated with a person named Daddy White AKS (Phone number: +234 803 406 1284), allegedly described as a 10% commission from the N100 million demanded.
- A transfer of N20 million to Hon. Ochi Nonso (Phone number: +234 806 080 1162), supposedly intended to secure bail and cancel a court order meant to detain Agwu indefinitely.
A source familiar with the case noted, “The CP said the whole charges would be dropped as soon as the full amount was paid. If he claims innocence, why is the IGP allegedly asking for a refund?”
Public Outrage and Calls for Investigation
The scandal has sparked widespread condemnation, with human rights organizations and legal professionals demanding an independent probe into the matter. Civil rights activists argue that the brazen use of IPOB and Eastern Security Network (ESN) affiliations to justify extortion calls for urgent reforms within law enforcement agencies.
The police force is now under pressure to address the allegations transparently and take disciplinary actions against those involved. Critics have urged financial authorities to investigate the bank accounts used for the transactions, emphasizing that corruption within security agencies undermines public trust and national security.
Conclusion
With mounting evidence contradicting the Enugu Police Command’s official stance, the scandal is far from over. The revelations of extortion, fake identities, and threats raise significant concerns about the integrity of law enforcement in the region.
As calls for accountability grow louder, Nigerians await further action from both the government and law enforcement oversight bodies.
