Enugu Graduate’s Killing: Boyfriend Remanded

The investigation into the death of 27-year-old Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu has moved into court, with police in Enugu announcing the arraignment and remand of her boyfriend, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel.

Emmanuel, 30, appeared in court on October 16 following the conclusion of police investigations. The court ordered his remand in correctional custody and directed that the case file be forwarded to the state Attorney-General through the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for review and legal advice.

According to News, which reported the police statement on October 17, the alleged killing occurred in September. The arraignment is the latest development in the case, rather than a newly discovered death.

Ugwu had recently completed the National Youth Service Corps programme. Police identified her as a Medical Laboratory Science graduate of the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu.

An earlier police account placed the incident at an apartment in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu. Investigators alleged that she was killed on September 19 and that her remains were concealed inside the apartment.

Neighbours reportedly became concerned after noticing an odour from the premises. Police said Emmanuel was arrested on September 21 after officers intervened when a crowd apprehended him. Ugwu’s remains were subsequently taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The command also said her parents and siblings had been identified and interviewed, with Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa assuring the family that the case would be pursued.

Police attributed the alleged violence to an argument between the couple. That account remains part of the prosecution’s allegations and has not been established through a completed trial.

The available arraignment report did not identify the court, record Emmanuel’s plea or provide a next hearing date. His remand does not amount to a conviction. The next disclosed procedural step is the review of the investigation file for legal advice. News
