The Enugu State Government has ordered the arrest and prosecution of students involved in a bullying incident at Federal Government College, Enugu. This directive follows the circulation of a disturbing video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which shows a group of male students using their belts to flog a fellow student in their school hostel.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the state Commissioner for Education, Professor Ndubueze Mbah, condemned the incident, describing the video as “deeply troubling and emotionally distressing.” Professor Mbah reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance policy toward bullying, abuse, and any form of dehumanizing behavior within learning environments across Enugu State.
“The Enugu State Government has zero tolerance for bullying and abuse in our schools,” Mbah stated. He emphasized that the safety and well-being of students are paramount and that the government is resolute in prosecuting anyone engaged in criminal behavior against students.
“Such immoral behavior has no place in our academic environments, and those who tread that path must be ready to face the consequences,” he added.
Professor Mbah disclosed that the Enugu State Government is in close communication with the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure appropriate sanctions for both the offending students and any school officials who may have neglected their duty to provide a safe environment.
He emphasized the commitment of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to student welfare and safety, noting the state’s substantial investments in education aimed at fostering a secure and supportive learning environment.
The commissioner assured parents, students, and the public that the state government would remain committed to upholding the safety and welfare of students across Enugu. He highlighted the state’s track record of prioritizing student welfare through investments in education, which he said were designed to create a conducive atmosphere for learning and growth.
In a firm warning to educational institutions within Enugu State, the government underscored the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of students, urging school authorities to adopt proactive measures against harassment, intimidation, and violence.
“Institutions that fail in their duty to protect students from such harm will face dire consequences,” Mbah stated, noting that any violation of the values of respect, equality, and freedom would not be tolerated within the educational system.
The government’s decisive response to this incident reflects its commitment to a respectful, safe, and equal learning environment where students can thrive free from fear of violence or abuse.
