The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Remuneration Committee, Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, has commended the NBA Young Lawyers’ Forum (YLF), Birnin-Kebbi Branch, for convening its Mentorship & Chat Day 2025, describing the initiative as both visionary and strategically aligned with the long-term interests of the legal profession.

In a goodwill message, Obegolu congratulated the Muhammad Usman-led Executive Committee, the Planning Committee, and members of the Branch on the successful organisation of the programme, noting that intentional mentorship remains indispensable to building a competent, confident, and ethically grounded generation of young lawyers.

He observed that the theme, “Unlock Your Legal Potentials: Tapping from Mentors’ Knowledge, Skills and Experiences,” resonates deeply with current efforts within the NBA to reposition young lawyers not only for professional excellence, but also for economic sustainability within practice.

According to him, mentorship must go hand in hand with conversations around professional value, standards, and compensation, stressing that the NBA Remuneration Order 2023 was introduced to protect young lawyers from exploitation, promote fair compensation, and reinforce dignity in legal practice.

Obegolu noted that platforms such as the Mentorship & Chat Day provide a critical opportunity to educate young lawyers on the importance of understanding their professional worth, contractual rights, and the ethical framework underpinning legal remuneration in Nigeria.

He further commended the Birnin-Kebbi YLF for creating a space where experienced practitioners can transmit not only legal skills and knowledge, but also practical guidance on career structure, workplace standards, and compliance with the Remuneration Order.

“A sustainable legal profession is built on two foundations: sound mentorship and fair remuneration. While mentorship unlocks potential, the NBA Remuneration Order 2023 ensures that such potential is nurtured with dignity, value, and respect.”

Obegolu expressed confidence that the discussions and engagements from the programme would empower young lawyers to pursue excellence while upholding professional standards, adding that the NBA remains committed to policies and initiatives that strengthen both capacity and welfare across the Bar.

He concluded by wishing the organisers and participants a successful and impactful Mentorship & Chat Day.
