Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as the Shi’ite movement, has made explosive claims, directly accusing the United States of America (US) of being the originator and principal financier of major terrorist groups operating in Nigeria and the Middle East.
In a widely circulating video, El-Zakzaky specifically named the US as the entity responsible for creating Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), further alleging that the US is actively funding the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) and ISIS in the region.
Alleged Political Conspiracy in Nigerian Insecurity
The Islamic leader asserted that the pervasive insecurity plaguing Nigeria is not a grassroots phenomenon but a crisis deliberately orchestrated by powerful political figures.
“The Insecurity Problem in Nigeria was created by politicians in power, and if they want to stop it today, they would, because they are the ones who engineered it,” El-Zakzaky stated.

He challenged the narrative surrounding banditry and armed herders, questioning the sudden acquisition of sophisticated military equipment by groups previously known for pastoral activities:
“How come those people who are known to be cattle rearers have guns in the bush? How come those people they call bandits have armoured vehicles in the bushes and they call them terrorists? Where did this tankers come from?”
El-Zakzaky concluded that state authorities are unequivocally aware of and involved in the insecurity, arguing that if they wished to halt the violence, they possess the means to do so immediately.
US Motives: Resource Control and Mass Killings
The IMN leader strongly criticized any attempt by the Nigerian government to seek foreign assistance, particularly from the US, to resolve the security crisis. He framed such involvement as counter-productive, arguing that seeking a remedy from the alleged culprit will only lead to further devastation.
“They said that they would use terrorism to conquer Africa. Now you expect them to bring the remedy to what they caused; what do you expect? Mass killings of people,” he warned.
El-Zakzaky tied the alleged US involvement directly to Nigeria’s vast natural resources. He claimed the foreign actors prioritize resource theft, asserting that their protection activities are selectively focused on regions rich in gold, oil, gas, and other resources, citing specific protection of Christians in states like Zamfara and Katsina.

The comments, delivered at a sensitive time for national security, are expected to stir significant debate regarding the foreign dimension of Nigeria’s protracted anti-terrorism campaigns.
