A complaint arising from a roadside encounter in Ekiti State has progressed to disciplinary proceedings at Force Headquarters in Abuja, where police officers featured in a viral video are facing scrutiny over alleged extortion and intimidation.
The latest development was disclosed by the Police Complaint Response Unit on October 13 under complaint tracking number CRU100953.
According to Source, the unit said the officers were undergoing disciplinary action following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police.
How the complaint began
The Ekiti State Police Command received a complaint on October 6 from representatives of the Biker Association’s Federal University Oye-Ekiti chapter.
They alleged that officers intercepted a member travelling from Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti and demanded money under improper circumstances.
The command subsequently identified the officers and took them into custody for questioning. The allegations under examination included extortion, intimidation, disobedience to lawful orders and other unprofessional conduct.
Video brought the encounter into public view
Earlier reporting by NPO Reports described footage in which an officer questioned the rider about his licence and roadworthiness documents before allegedly demanding ₦20,000.
The report also described threatening language during the exchange. The Police Complaint Response Unit acknowledged a complaint about the footage and issued the same tracking number now attached to the disciplinary update.
That sequence links the initial public complaint to the latest proceedings, although it does not establish the final outcome of the investigation.
No final sanction announced
The Ekiti command condemned extortion and abuse of authority, stating that officers were not authorised to demand or collect money from members of the public while performing legitimate duties.
The report did not disclose a final disciplinary decision or identify the sanctions the officers might face. It also did not announce criminal convictions arising from the encounter.
The next substantive development will be the findings of the proceedings and the action taken on them. For the complainant, the case has moved beyond an acknowledged complaint; whether that process delivers a clear, publicly explained outcome remains to be seen.
