The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly barred the legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from further access to him. According to his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, the DSS has cancelled all future visitations for Kanu’s legal representatives, raising concerns over his client’s solitary confinement and well-being.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Ejimakor expressed deep concern, stating that Kanu may “never be seen again” due to the severity of his isolation. He attributed the DSS’s actions to Kanu’s recent outburst during a Federal High Court proceeding, where the pro-Biafra leader challenged Justice Binta Nyako, urging her to recuse herself from his case. Justice Nyako ultimately stepped down from the proceedings despite federal government lawyers’ objections.
Ejimakor condemned the DSS’s actions, emphasizing that they violated both court orders and the Nigerian Constitution. “It appears that the DSS has cancelled all future visitations to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as retaliation for causing embarrassment to Justice Binta Nyako,” he said. The move, he claimed, has effectively placed Kanu in absolute solitary confinement, further isolating him from legal representation.
Ejimakor concluded by expressing uncertainty about when or if his legal team would be able to meet with Kanu again.
