Dignus Chambers: NBA Gwagwalada Branch Launches Maiden Hamisu Umar (Khamis) Young Lawyers Debate Competition

Dignus Chambers: The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Gwagwalada Branch, through its Continuing Legal Education Committee, in collaboration with the Young Lawyers’ Forum (YLF) of the Branch, has announced the maiden edition of the Hamisu Umar (Khamis) Young Lawyers Debate Competition.

The debate competition is designed to promote intellectual engagement, advocacy excellence, and professional development among young lawyers within the Gwagwalada Branch. It also serves as a platform to deepen critical thinking, legal reasoning, research competence, effective communication, and public speaking skills among emerging legal practitioners.

According to the organisers, the initiative is intended to immortalise the immediate past Chairman of the NBA Gwagwalada Branch Young Lawyers’ Forum, Mr. Hamisu Umar (Khamis), who passed on in March 2025 after a protracted illness. The competition honours his commitment to mentoring young lawyers and advancing legal education within the Branch.

Dignus Chambers: The organisers noted that debate remains a vital tool in legal training, as it encourages adaptability, quick thinking, professionalism, and an appreciation of diverse perspectives, while also creating opportunities for networking and career advancement.

The competition will provide a forum for young lawyers to interrogate pressing legal and national issues and contribute meaningfully to contemporary legal discourse. The specific debate topic, according to the organisers, will be unveiled in due course.

Eligibility and Participation

To be eligible for participation:

  • Applicants must be young lawyers within 1–7 years post call; and
  • Applicants must be duly registered members of the NBA Gwagwalada Branch.

Interested participants are required to complete and submit the online registration form on or before 12 midnight, 14 January 2026. The organisers disclosed that participation slots are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Prizes and Sponsorship

The debate competition is sponsored by Dignus Chambers. The first prize winner will receive ₦200,000, while the second prize winner will receive ₦100,000. All participants will also be appreciated with consolation prizes.
