The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has reiterated the federal government’s commitment to eradicating banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities in Nigeria’s Northwest region. Matawalle made the pledge during a press briefing in Sokoto State on Wednesday, emphasising the government’s dedication to restoring peace and security.
He noted that his visit to Sokoto was part of a directive from President Bola Tinubu to oversee and coordinate the military operations against criminal elements in the region.
“As directed by Mr President, I am back in Sokoto State to coordinate the mission of flushing out bandits and other criminals,” Matawalle stated. He highlighted the achievements made so far, including the neutralisation of notorious gang leaders and other criminals across Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states, where relative peace has begun to return.
The minister expressed confidence that the ongoing military operation, codenamed Operation “Fansan Yamma,” will continue to deliver positive results. He assured the people of the Northwest that the federal government remains resolute in protecting their lives and property.
“We will never leave you alone,” Matawalle said, commending the gallant efforts of security forces. He vowed that the government would maintain its support for the military, ensuring they had the resources and morale necessary to continue the fight against insecurity.
In addition, Matawalle acknowledged the role of Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu in supporting the anti-banditry operations. He stressed the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments, security agencies, and local stakeholders to achieve total success in defeating the criminals.
“We must use both kinetic and non-kinetic methods to crush these bandits entirely. We will not give them any breathing space,” the minister affirmed, adding that the government will not be swayed by any propaganda or mischief intended to undermine their efforts.
Matawalle’s visit follows an earlier deployment to Sokoto in September alongside Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, which is in line with President Tinubu’s directive to intensify operations against banditry in the region.
