The Citizens Liberties Committee under the Nigerian Bar Association has secured the release of Godwil Ikechukwu, Esq., having received with deep shock and dismay the disturbing report of the unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday, the 14th of October, 2025, at the Upper Customary Court 1, New Karu, Nasarawa State, where a magistrate purportedly issued a bench warrant against a legal practitioner, which regrettably resulted in the assault and physical injury of Godwil Ikechukwu, Esq. by a court staff member.
It was further gathered that the said lawyer’s phone was also unlawfully seized in the course of the incident.
The Keffi Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association played a vital role, and both the Committee and the Keffi Branch are investigating the ugly incident to bring the perpetrators to book.
This dastardly act is not only condemnable but also represents a grave affront to the sanctity of the legal profession and the dignity of the Bar.
The courtroom, which ought to be a temple of justice, decorum, and respect for the rule of law, must not be desecrated by acts of violence or abuse of authority.
Any attempt to intimidate, assault, or humiliate a legal practitioner in the course of performing his professional duty is an attack on the entire legal profession and on the justice system itself.
We therefore call on the Hon. Chief Judge, Nasarawa State Judiciary; the Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State, and the Judicial Service Commission, Nasarawa State, to immediately cause a discreet investigation into this incident, identify all culprits involved, and ensure that justice is done without delay.
While the Committee has commenced a thorough investigation, the Citizens Liberties Committee assures the legal community and the public of its unwavering commitment to defend the rights, dignity, and safety of all legal practitioners in Nigeria and the citizenry.
