Controversy and Protests
Despite the official announcement, the appointment process has been marred by allegations and protests. Stakeholders accused the governing council of bias, alleging that the process favored Maikudi, who was reportedly said not to meet the required years of academic experience to hold the position of Vice-Chancellor.
Furthermore, divisions within the institution’s governing council emerged during the process. Reports indicate that some council members boycotted meetings convened to finalize the appointment. Critics argued that these actions undermined the integrity of the process.
Qualifications and Selection Process
The university defended its decision, asserting that the process adhered strictly to the regulations governing appointments. According to the statement, Maikudi emerged as the best candidate after a rigorous evaluation of all shortlisted individuals.
The governing council emphasized that the selection process was transparent and merit-based, reflecting the university’s commitment to academic excellence and institutional leadership.
Looking Ahead
Professor Aisha Maikudi’s appointment marks a significant milestone for the University of Abuja, as she becomes the second woman to hold the position of Vice-Chancellor in the institution’s history.
However, the controversies surrounding her selection highlight the need for continued efforts to ensure fairness and transparency in university governance.
As Maikudi assumes office, stakeholders will closely watch her leadership and efforts to address the institution’s challenges while fostering academic excellence and inclusivity.
