David Nwokorie, who was arrested following a dispute with his former partner, Genevieve Opara, has been released on administrative bail. His release, which took place on Thursday, was made possible after the intervention of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore, who previously raised concerns about the arrest, reportedly contacted the Commissioner of Police at the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NCC), advocating for Nwokorie’s release. Despite initial resistance and what were described as “ludicrous” bail conditions, Nwokorie eventually regained his freedom through efforts coordinated by his legal team and facilitated by Isaac Bristol.

Background to the Arrest

Nwokorie’s arrest by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) stemmed from a petition filed by Genevieve Opara, Deputy Manager at the National Pension Commission and daughter of retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hilary Opara. Genevieve, who is currently married to a Federal Road Safety Corps official, Seal Nwaka, accused Nwokorie of cyberstalking, blackmail, and issuing threats to her life.

According to Nwokorie’s lawyer, Barrister Ezike Chibuzor, the situation evolved from a failed relationship between the two. The lawyer alleged that Nwokorie only discovered Genevieve had been previously married with two children after their relationship had developed significantly.

“Genevieve never disclosed her past marriage and children. When David found out, he ended the relationship,” said Chibuzor.

The lawyer further explained that tensions escalated after Nwokorie proposed to another woman in January. Following this, Genevieve allegedly vandalized his home. Although Nwokorie initially forgave her, the relationship ultimately deteriorated, along with a joint NGO project they had started.

In response to the property damage, Nwokorie demanded ₦25 million in compensation and published a flyer with Genevieve’s photo, labeling her “wanted for damages done to his home.” This act reportedly prompted Genevieve’s petition to the police.

Bail Conditions and Police Involvement

Nwokorie’s release was delayed due to highly stringent bail conditions imposed by the FCID. According to documents obtained by SaharaReporters, the police demanded two sureties who must either be high-ranking federal employees or business owners with Abuja properties valued at a minimum of ₦500 million, complete with valid Certificates of Occupancy.

Sources close to the case allege that Genevieve’s father, retired DIG Hilary Opara, may have influenced the arrest and detention process. “We believe he’s using his connections to keep David behind bars,” said a family member.

Sowore criticized the conditions, stating, “Officer Omaka insisted that nothing would change them,” referring to the police officer handling the case.

Accusations and Legal Tensions

Genevieve has accused Nwokorie of cyberbullying, blackmail, and threats to life. In response to media inquiries, she declined to elaborate, citing the matter’s status in court.

“I think you should speak to my lawyer,” she said. “The police cannot just arrest people arbitrarily. They must have had some information.”

Genevieve’s lawyer echoed her sentiments, refusing to provide additional details: “The matter is sub judice. It has already been filed in court, and we cannot speak further.”

Further complicating the situation, Nwokorie is alleged to have contacted Genevieve’s estranged husband—who she is currently battling in court over child custody—offering to testify in the case and sending him personal photos of himself with Genevieve and her children.

As legal proceedings unfold, the situation continues to attract public attention, raising questions about the role of personal influence in law enforcement and the boundaries of online expression in failed relationships.
