Nigerian Senior Advocate Dr. Babatunde Ajibade, SAN, is playing a leading role today at the International Bar Association Annual Conference in Copenhagen as lawyers examine mounting pressures on the global profession.
Ajibade, Chair of the IBA’s Section on Public and Professional Interest, is co-moderating the session “A Profession Under Pressure.”
The three-hour programme brings together different sections of the profession to consider challenges arising from regulation, ethics, artificial intelligence, public service, law-firm management and the changing expectations confronting younger lawyers.
The IBA programme notes that legal education did not anticipate many of the ethical pressures now confronting practitioners, while young lawyers are entering a profession that looks increasingly different from the one in which senior practitioners built their careers.
AI is also altering legal research, drafting, client service and firm economics, raising questions about whether efficiency gains may come at the cost of professional judgment or traditional pathways through which lawyers acquire expertise.
The session is designed as a series of round-table discussions before a concluding panel attempts to identify practical responses and assess the future of the profession.
Ajibade’s leadership of the session strengthens the visibility of Nigerian practitioners within one of the major global conversations about the future regulation and identity of lawyers.
