After days on the run, police nab landlord’s son ‘who raped’ Lagos teenager

The Lagos State Police Command on Friday arrested the suspect accused of raping a 14-year-old girl in Alakuko, Lagos.

The Command’s Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest during a phone interview with our correspondent, adding that investigation had started.

“The suspect was arrested this morning and investigation is ongoing,” he said.

Earlier, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency had announced the arrest in a statement released on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) on Friday, saying it is collaborating with the State Police Command to investigate the case.

The state’s agency stressed that the survivor is receiving comprehensive medical care.

“We appreciate everyone who brought the tragic incident of child sexual abuse in Alakuko, Lagos to our attention.

“We are working with the #LagosPoliceNG in investigating the case. The survivor is receiving comprehensive medical care, and the suspect is currently in police custody. More details to follow,” the statement read.

The incident was brought to light by an X.com user @Rhwaley, who shared videos of the victim after the alleged crime had happened.

In the shared video on X.com which our correspondent watched on Tuesday, the minor could be seen crying and her jeans stained with blood.

In the tweet, @Rhwaley alleged that when the minor’s family accosted the landlord about the incident, he dismissed their concerns, saying “Nothing will happen.”

“A 14yrs old girl was raped yesterday by her landlord’s son in Alakuko Lagos. The parents and family of the girl are helpless. The landlord said nothing will happen!!

The Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Lagos State Governor, Jubril Gawat, in his reaction to the post made by @Rhwaley on X.com assured the public that no one was helpless on the matter, and advised the family to contact the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team for assistance.

His post read, “Helpless ke …. Nobody is helpless on this matter in this state. Call #Lagosdsva SHARPLY.”
