The 2025 NBA Kaduna Branch Law Week began with strong participation from several respected figures in the legal profession.

Among them was Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Life Bencher, whose contributions added significant depth to the event’s opening day.

Later in the programme, Akinboro, SAN, delivered the keynote at a focused session titled “Navigating Ethics: Understanding the Rules of Professional Conduct 2023.”

The session attracted lawyers across various levels of practice, eager to better understand the revised Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) 2023 and the Legal Practitioners’ Remuneration Order (LPRO).

Aare Akinboro went beyond theory—he shared printed copies of both the RPC 2023 and the LPRO with all participants, a gesture that was warmly received and widely appreciated.

This symbolic act reflected his consistent dedication to mentorship and professional development.

In his detailed address, Akinboro examined the spirit behind the RPC 2023, drawing attention to the updated ethical expectations and urging lawyers to embrace a values-based approach to practice.

“The new rules are not merely for compliance. They are meant to remind us of who we are and why the public must continue to trust the legal profession,” he stated firmly.

He cautioned against a passive or fearful approach to ethics, stressing that professional responsibility should be rooted in self-respect and purpose.

“Ethics are not only a fence against discipline; they are the foundation of the profession’s credibility,” Akinboro added.

According to him, lawyers must develop a conscious habit of upholding the rules—not just to avoid penalties—but to preserve the dignity of their work and maintain public confidence in the justice system.

“It is the observation of the ethics of the profession that projects the noble image of the profession and evokes the much-needed public confidence and trust in the legal system,” he said.

He continued:

“There is a strong link between our duty as lawyers to uphold professional standards and the long-term survival of the legal profession.”

Participants described the session as “eye-opening” and “timely,” particularly in light of emerging challenges faced by lawyers in practice.

The session concluded with a lively question-and-answer segment, during which Akinboro encouraged lawyers to ask difficult questions and remain open to continuous learning.

The NBA Kaduna Law Week continues with more discussions and engagements, but Akinboro’s session stood out for its honest reflections, practical wisdom, and the generosity of both knowledge and materials.

It was a reminder that ethics is not a burden to be endured, but a value to be lived—and that the future of legal practice rests on the integrity of those who belong to it.
