This day means a lot to me, and to humanity at large. Because on this day, you arrived on earth.

The celebration of that first cry has not been in vain. It has met its purpose and found its reason. You have not just lived – you have given definition and voice to the issues that touch the very fabric of our society. You have defended the Bar, protected its independence, and left it stronger than you found it.

Factually, you mean many things to many people, yes. To the Bar, you are courage. To the profession, you are reform. To many, you are a leader.

But to me, you are more.

To me, you are an imperfect man – beautifully human – who taught me what it truly means to be accountable. To be humane. To put others first, even when it costs you.

You taught me what true friendship means: to tell your friend the truth, even when it hurts. To stay, when it is easier to go. To carry your brother through every rise and fall.

People come and people go, but you, Mazi, have remained.

On this birthday, I do not just celebrate your birth. I celebrate your courage, your conscience, and your heart. The heart of a friend, the mind of a leader, and the soul of a servant.

Happy Birthday, my dear friend and Leader

May this new year be kind to you. May no regret steal your breath. And may the same God who carried you through the pressures and triumphs of leading Africa’s largest Bar continue to carry you through it all.

We celebrate you today, Learned Silk.

With deep respect and affection.
