Anti-Corruption Lawyer Shot Dead at Sports Centre

Guatemalan lawyer and former prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa has been shot dead at a sports complex in Guatemala City, prompting arrests and a presidential demand for a full investigation.

The attack occurred on October 17 at Campo Marte, where the lawyer was playing football, according to EFE’s report, citing official sources.

Police spokesperson César Mateo confirmed his death and the preliminary arrest of two suspects. EFE also reported that a second person died in the incident, although authorities had not immediately identified that person.

Reuters reported that police recovered a carbine-style firearm and a motorcycle in connection with the attack. President Bernardo Arévalo condemned the killing and called for accountability for both the attackers and anyone who ordered it. Reuters

Solórzano Foppa’s career included senior investigative and revenue-enforcement roles. He served as director of Criminal Analysis at the Public Prosecutor’s Office from 2013 to 2016 and headed the country’s tax authority from 2016 to 2018.

EFE linked his investigative work to the high-profile “La Línea” corruption case, which contributed to the resignation of President Otto Pérez Molina in 2015. He also participated in the defence of journalist José Rubén Zamora.

His death brings a criminal investigation into the killing of a lawyer whose work had placed him in conflict with influential interests. However, the reports reviewed do not establish who commissioned the attack or a proven motive. The detained suspects have not been convicted.
