Eight people were injured in a knife attack at a commercial complex in Incheon, South Korea, on October 13, with one victim reported to have suffered cardiac arrest.
Police detained a suspect after shoppers intervened, while emergency personnel transported the victims to hospitals.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Namdong Police Station said the attack occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time.
The suspect allegedly had knives fastened to both hands and moved through the building using an escalator. The complex houses a Homeplus supermarket on its second basement level.
Shoppers intervened before police arrest
Yonhap reported that shoppers subdued the suspect before police apprehended him. All eight victims were taken to hospitals, and an emergency medical centre was established on the building’s first floor in case additional casualties were identified.
Reuters reported that the victims included six women and two men. A woman in her twenties underwent surgery after sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Police said they were investigating the motive and circumstances. The reports reviewed did not establish a death.
Homeplus clarifies location
Early reports associated the attack with the supermarket. However, Source, reported a clarification from Homeplus stating that the incident occurred at the second-floor food court of the C&C complex.
The company said its Incheon Guwol supermarket occupies the basement and that the attack did not occur inside its store. This distinction is important when identifying the scene.
Electronic monitoring faces scrutiny
Reuters reported that the suspect had been wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet following an earlier prison sentence. The Justice Ministry said it would investigate the monitoring system. www.reuters.com
A later report also described a planned re-examination of electronic monitoring and supervision arrangements.
The inquiry now extends beyond the attack itself to the effectiveness of supervision. Investigators have yet to publicly establish the motive or explain what, if any, intervention could have prevented the incident.
